Across the front page was a story by O\u2019Donnell Bennett titled \u201cChicagoland\u2019s Shrines: A Tour of Discoveries.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The subhed for that first story was notably \u201cOur Own Midwest, Scenic and Historic, Revealed.\u201d Chicagoland was the Midwest with Chicago at its center, a <em>Tribune<\/em>-defined region <em>Tribune<\/em> readers identified with or would-be <em>Tribune<\/em> readers wanted to identify with, a region invented and boosted to sell newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>Curious City argues that this early Chicagoland <em>major<\/em> gave way over time to a more localized, more suburbanized, near-Chicago Chicagoland <em>minor<\/em>\u2014even though one of their own exhibits, the fantastic <em>Chicago Tribune<\/em> 1927 <em>Special Detailed Road Map of Chicagoland<\/em>, shows that the Chicagoland <em>minor<\/em> existed alongside the Chicagoland <em>major<\/em> essentially from the very start. The point stands, though, the the idea of \u201cChicagoland\u201d being a term that could be applied to the Midwest has largely faded.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve generally disliked the term, but I can see its usefulness as potential a way for us suburbanites to accurately express where we\u2019re from without saying we\u2019re \u201cfrom Chicago\u201d\u2014a geographic rounding or exaggeration that drives <em>actual<\/em> Chicagoans crazy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WBEZ\u2019s Curious City looks into \u201cChicagoland,\u201d the term, its origins, purpose, and definition\u2014its boundaries.
